Long before the campus became a hub for learning, the Crichton Institute was established with a pioneering vision for health and wellbeing.
In the 19th century, it was recognised internationally for its progressive approach to mental health care—placing dignity, environment, and holistic support at the centre of its work.
Here we can learn more about the story of how Dumfries and Galloway College is not only rooted in delivering skills and opportunity, but also care, support, and wellbeing.
Today, that legacy continues in a modern context. The Crichton is not only a place of education, but a community that recognises the importance of supporting the whole person.
Throughout its history the College has recognised the importance of supporting students through guidance, advice and wellbeing services.
In this spirit, Dumfries and Galloway College continues to place student wellbeing at the heart of its approach—ensuring that learners are supported not only to succeed academically, but to thrive personally.

A place shaped by care
Long before Dumfries and Galloway College became part of the Crichton Learning Campus, this site was associated with a pioneering vision for health and wellbeing. The Crichton Institute became known for its belief that people should be supported with dignity and compassion, and that surroundings and environment could play an important role in recovery and quality of life.
That history adds an important dimension to the College’s story. This is not only a place of learning, but a place shaped by care, support and the understanding that people achieve more when they are helped to thrive.
Supporting the whole student
Throughout its history, the College has recognised that education is about more than qualifications alone. Guidance, advice and wellbeing support have all played an important part in helping students overcome challenges, build confidence and make progress.
Today, that commitment continues in a modern setting. The Crichton is home to a wider community of organisations that support health, wellbeing and opportunity across the region. Together, they help create an environment where learners can feel supported not only academically, but personally too.
A continuing legacy
In many ways, student wellbeing is part of a much longer story at the Crichton. The same values that once made this place distinctive—care, dignity and a holistic view of people’s needs—still matter today.
For Dumfries and Galloway College, supporting learners means helping them succeed in their studies while also ensuring they have the encouragement, advice and wellbeing support needed to flourish beyond the classroom.
Take a moment to reflect
